Dog and cat together at home
Dogs and cats can become best friends—with the right introduction and patience.
Dogs and cats can live together fine—if they're introduced properly. Rushing doesn't work. Give both animals time to get to know each other through smell, sound and only then sight. With patience and structure they often become inseparable.
📋 Steps for a successful introduction
- 1. Start with smell: keep the cat and dog in separate rooms. Swap blankets or toys so they get used to each other's scent.
- 2. Feed them on either side of a closed door. That way they associate each other's scent with something positive (food).
- 3. First sight: keep the dog on a leash or behind a gate. Let the cat decide how close to come. Don't pay attention to tension—do reward calm behaviour.
- 4. Build up briefly and under supervision. Always give the cat an escape route (height, room where the dog isn't allowed). Never force.
⏱️ Patience is essential
Some pairs are friends within weeks. Others need months. Others tolerate each other without ever cuddling. That's okay too. Make sure both animals feel safe and have their own space.
