Leaving your dog home alone

From barking neighbour complaints to a relaxed dog: how to teach your dog to be alone.

The door closes. You hear it already: barking, whining, scratching. Or worse: a destroyed sofa, puddles on the floor. Separation anxiety isn't stubbornness—it's pure stress. The good news: almost every dog can learn to be alone for short or longer periods. It takes patience, a plan and the right approach. Here's how.

🧠 Why do dogs find being alone so hard?

Dogs are pack animals. In nature, being alone means being vulnerable. For many dogs, their owner leaving feels like a threat. They don't know if you'll return. That uncertainty can lead to anxiety, barking, destructive behaviour or house soiling.

Some dogs also have a past: neglect, shelter, or trauma. For them, building trust is extra important. No punishment, no anger—just structure and positive associations.

📋 5 tips that really work

  • 1. Build up gradually. Start with seconds: door closed, immediately open again. Then a minute. Then five. Never longer than your dog can handle—otherwise you teach him that being alone is scary.
  • 2. Make leaving and returning boring. No dramatic goodbyes, no exuberant greetings. Leave calmly, return calmly. That makes it normal.
  • 3. Give a treat or Kong before you leave. That way your dog associates your departure with something positive. Only make the toy available when you're away.
  • 4. Ensure enough exercise and mental stimulation before you leave. A tired dog is a calm dog.
  • 5. Consider a behaviourist if it doesn't work. Severe separation anxiety sometimes needs professional guidance.

⏱️ How long can a dog be alone?

Puppies and young dogs: max 2–4 hours. Adult dogs: 4–6 hours is achievable for most, if they've learned it. Longer than 8 hours alone is not ideal for many dogs. Consider a dog walker or sitter if you work full-time.
