Fireworks and pets

Tips to keep your dog or cat safe and calm during New Year's Eve and holidays.

Fireworks are a source of stress and anxiety for many dogs and cats. The loud noise and unexpected bangs can startle animals, make them flee or hide. With the right preparation, you can help your pet get through New Year's Eve and other holidays more calmly.

🔇 Why fireworks cause stress

Dogs' and cats' hearing is much more sensitive than humans'. Bangs sound much louder and more unpredictable to them. Some animals become scared, tremble, pant or seek a hiding spot. Others may try to flee. It's important to offer your pet a safe, quiet place and not punish anxious behaviour.

🛡️ Practical tips

  • Provide a quiet, sheltered spot—a room without windows or with blackout curtains, with a bed or blanket.
  • Keep windows and doors closed during fireworks. This prevents your pet from fleeing and getting lost.
  • Stay calm and give your pet distraction: toys, a chew snack or soft music. Don't force cuddles if your pet wants to hide.
  • Consider a Thundershirt or calming supplements—ask your vet for advice.

🎧 Sound protection

Headphones or ear muffs for dogs can help dampen the noise. Make sure they fit well and your pet gets used to them before New Year's Eve. With cats this is often harder; a quiet room with soft music or a white-noise app can already help.
