Microchipping: chip your dog or cat

Why chip? How does it work? And why is it required for travel and adoption?

A microchip is a small implant (the size of a grain of rice) placed under the skin. It contains a unique number that can be read with a scanner. Chipping is required for travel within the EU and for many adoption organisations—including Saved Souls.

🔍 How does it work?

The chip is placed under the skin by a vet, usually between the shoulder blades. It doesn't hurt and takes seconds.

  • Each chip has a unique 15-digit number (ISO standard)
  • Register the chip in a database—otherwise your pet can't be identified
  • Vets, shelters and customs can scan the number

Why chip?

  • Lost animals can be returned to their owner
  • Required for travel within and outside the EU
  • Many adoption organisations chip their animals before transfer
