🌡️ Overheating

Overheating in dogs and cats

Dogs and cats can't sweat well. How to protect them from heat—crucial in Thailand.

Dogs and cats regulate their temperature differently than humans. They barely sweat—dogs pant, cats seek cool spots. At high temperatures (especially above 30°C) they risk overheating. In Thailand this is a year-round concern.

🚨 Symptoms of overheating

  • Heavy panting, drooling, lethargy
  • Red or pale tongue and gums
  • Vomiting, staggering, loss of consciousness—go to the vet immediately

Prevention

  • Walk early morning or late evening—not in full sun
  • Always fresh water available, shade and cool spots at home
  • Never leave a dog or cat in a parked car—even with the window open
  • Asphalt can burn—test with your hand, walk on grass when possible

🩺 What to do if overheating?

Move the animal to a cool place immediately. Give small sips of water (not forced). Wet towels on paws and belly—not ice cold. Call the vet for severe symptoms.
