Grieving the loss of your pet
Losing a pet is heartbreaking. Grief is valid. And you can honour their memory.
Losing a dog or cat is for many people as painful as losing a family member. They were always there, gave unconditional love and were part of your daily life. Grief is valid. There is no 'right' way to grieve—everyone does it in their own way.
💜 Grief is normal
Sadness, emptiness, guilt, anger—it's all part of it. Some grieve for weeks, others for months or years. There is no time limit. Talk about it with people who understand. Online there are communities for people who have lost a pet.
Children may grieve deeply. Be honest and give space for their emotions. Explain that it's okay to be sad.
🌿 What can help
- • Take your time. You don't have to clear things away or get a new pet right away.
- • Create a memorial: photos, an urn, a spot in the garden.
- • Talk about your pet. Sharing stories keeps the memory alive.
- • Consider an in memoriam donation—give another animal a second chance in their honour.
