Saved Souls Foundation • Lesson 2
How to interact with dogs and cats
What to do and not do – safely and with respect
What TO do
- ✓ Approach calmly and kindly
- ✓ Move slowly, do not shout
- ✓ Let the animal smell you first
- ✓ Pet gently if the animal wants to
- ✓ Show respect: animals have feelings
What NOT to do
- ✗ Do not chase or kick
- ✗ Do not shout or throw stones
- ✗ Do not hit, not even out of fear
- ✗ Do not touch or pick up suddenly
- ✗ No strange behaviour: stop things that scare animals
If you are afraid
Some children are afraid of dogs or cats. That is okay. But never hit or kick out of fear. Stay calm, walk away slowly, or ask an adult for help. You can learn to interact with animals differently.
Stay calm. Don't run. Don't shout. Walk away slowly if you are afraid.
Class activity
Practise in class: how do you walk calmly towards a (toy) dog? How do you give a cat space? Discuss what you would do if you see a street animal.
