Tropical diseases in dogs and cats
Heartworm, leishmania, ehrlichia, babesiosis and more. Vectors, prevention and what to do when travelling or relocating.
In warm countries there are extra risks for dogs and cats. Mosquitoes and ticks are the main vectors of serious diseases. Prevention and protection are essential—especially when travelling or relocating to the tropics.
🦟 Vectors
The main vectors of tropical diseases:
- • Mosquitoes—spread heartworm (dirofilariasis) and other parasites
- • Ticks—can transmit ehrlichia, babesiosis, anaplasma and other pathogens
🩺 Common tropical diseases
❤️🩹 Heartworm (dirofilariasis)
Transmitted by mosquitoes. Larvae develop into worms in the heart and pulmonary arteries. Can be fatal. Prevention: monthly tablet or spot-on. Treatment is complex and risky—prevention is better. See our heartworm page for more info.
🦠 Leishmania
Transmitted by sand flies. Chronic disease with skin problems, weight loss, kidney issues. Occurs in Southern Europe, Middle East, South America, parts of Asia. No cure—lifelong treatment. Prevention: protection against sand flies.
🩸 Ehrlichiosis
Transmitted by ticks. Can cause fever, lethargy, bleeding and joint problems. Treatment with antibiotics. Early diagnosis important.
🩸 Babesiosis
Transmitted by ticks. Destroys red blood cells—can cause severe anaemia. Symptoms: lethargy, pale mucous membranes, dark urine. Treatment needed.
🛡️ Prevention and protection
What you can do:
- • Monthly flea, tick and heartworm prevention (ask your vet for the right product for your destination)
- • Mosquito repellent or screens—especially in the evening when mosquitoes are active
- • Check your pet daily for ticks after walks in risk areas
Travelling or relocating
Travelling or relocating with your dog or cat to the tropics or subtropics? Get informed by a vet with experience in tropical diseases. Some countries require specific treatments or vaccinations. Start prevention in time—some products must be started weeks in advance.
