🐈 🪟 Cat indoor or outdoor

Indoor or outdoor cat?

Indoor cats live longer. Outdoor cats have more freedom. The pros and cons.

The question of whether your cat should be indoor or outdoor is a personal choice—but with big consequences. Indoor cats are less exposed to traffic, disease and conflicts with other animals. Outdoor cats have more freedom but run more risks. Here you'll find the trade-offs and tips for both.

⚖️ Indoor vs outdoor: the trade-off

Indoor cats live longer on average: no traffic, no fights, fewer infectious diseases. They do depend on you for exercise and stimulation. A balcony, catio or enclosed garden can be a safe compromise.

Outdoor cats have more freedom and natural behaviour—hunting, climbing, exploring. But they run risks of traffic, poisoning, fights and disease. In some countries a free-roaming cat is not allowed for these reasons.

3 tips

  • 1. Indoor cat: provide enough toys, scratching posts, climbing options and a litter box. Play with your cat daily.
  • 2. Outdoor cat: have your cat chipped and vaccinated. Consider a microchip cat flap so only your cat can get in.
  • 3. Compromise: an enclosed balcony or catio gives your cat fresh air without the risks.
